General
When is the deadline for applications?
The deadline for applications is Monday 24th November 2025.
Can I apply for more than one subject category?
No.
What if my research is to be included in a patent/IP application?
Do not share confidential or patent-pending information. Abstracts/posters will be viewed by external judges without confidentiality agreements, and the event is open to MPs and the scientific policy community. Consult your technology transfer office; do not apply if your research is under NDA or before IP decisions are made.
Will there be any feedback on my application?
Sorry, feedback is not provided.
Applicant criteria
Who can apply to present a poster? What is meant by early-career researchers?
Poster presenters are in the early part of their careers — MSc, PhD, Post-Docs, Research Assistants or Fellows, newly appointed lecturers, part-time and “mature” students, and their equivalents in national, public sector or industrial laboratories, or companies. The event is not appropriate for undergraduate students. Returners and those starting a second career are welcome; age is unimportant.
What is meant by a “newly appointed lecturer”?
“Newly appointed lecturers” are those appointed within the last 2 years (maximum).
Can non-British researchers apply?
Applicants do not have to be British, but must be working in the UK. Some work, especially fieldwork, may have been carried out overseas.
Can I apply again if I have previously been selected to attend a STEM for BRITAIN event?
No.
Can I apply again if I have previously been unsuccessful?
Yes.
Abstract guidance
What should the abstract contain?
It must contain:
- A title
- Name of presenter and co-workers
- Affiliation / complete address / postcode
It should also:
- Describe the problem and its significance (potential impact)
- Briefly describe the experimental method(s)
- Describe the achievements so far
Examples of successful abstracts can be found here.
Who is the target audience for the abstract?
Abstract judges are scientists and engineers, so the abstract can be more technical. The final poster should be aimed at an interested lay person.
Can I submit more than one abstract?
No.
How long should the abstract be?
One page of A4 maximum.
Can I include figures and tables in the abstract?
Yes — tables, graphs, diagrams, and images are allowed, but this reduces text space.
Are bibliographic references required?
No, though they may be included. However, it is suggested that space might be better used otherwise.
Can abstracts be altered?
You can upload a revised version at any time before the closing date; it replaces the previous version.
I cannot submit my abstract without employer approval, and clearance may be delayed — what do I do?
Please contact the organisers well before the closing date if your abstract may be delayed.
May I name my supervisor/co-workers on my abstract/poster?
Yes, but you must make clear your personal contribution. Only one person may present.
Reference guidance
When should the reference be provided?
At the same time as completing the application form and scientific abstract — it’s essential. Contact your referee as soon as you decide to apply.
What should the reference contain?
References should be on official headed paper with signature, from a university or organisation address. Referees should know you well and comment on your scientific contribution, achievements, and future promise.
Who should provide the reference?
Referees are usually senior colleagues, supervisors, Heads of Department, or similar.
Lay Summary guidance
What should the lay summary include?
Please include a summary of your research which is understandable by a member of the public, including an explanation of the impact of your research.
How long should the lay summary be?
The lay summary should be no more than 100 words.
Poster guidance
When are the posters required?
If selected, submit the poster electronically two weeks before the event. You must also bring a hard copy on the day.
What audience are the posters targeted at?
Posters should be intelligible to a lay person. Avoid using posters designed for learned society meetings. Judges will look for enthusiasm, clarity, brevity, and scientific excellence.
What size and format should the posters be?
They must be portrait (not landscape) and fit the boards (2 m high × 0.75 m wide). A1 portrait is appropriate.
Event FAQ
Can I bring any other material/equipment/visual aids?
No — space does not permit additional materials.
May I bring a colleague/supervisor/relative to the event?
Space is very limited. Unless there are exceptional circumstances (with prior approval), accompanying persons cannot be guaranteed access.
What if I cannot attend or another colleague wants to take my place?
No substitutes are allowed. The person who submits must present, and the deadline for that decision is the closing date. Inform organisers ASAP if you cannot attend; reserves may be available.
Is financial support available for travel or accommodation?
Sorry, no financial support is available.
